There's nothing more refreshing than being in the forest, surrounded by towering pines and hearing the wind rustle through the trees. The Kamas Valley Lions Club plans to bring a little more wilderness to Francis Town on Saturday, May 10th when they partner for the second time with TreeUtah to plant trees at the town's center. TreeUtah is a non-profit organization promoting the benefits of trees. As we all become more eco-aware and environmentally friendly, there is great focus on the benefits of trees. They can offset our carbon footprint (www.carbonfootprint.com) as well as help prevent and reduce soil erosion, water pollution; retain and recharge ground water, create privacy and muffle traffic noise, increase property value, add beauty and grace to any setting, and actually lower crime rates. Trees are also known for their calming benefits, allowing us to keep our souls connected to the magic of nature.
Lions Membership Chairperson Jason Barto said: "There was no formal site selection process. Francis resident Kristi Major heard of the project and forwarded information to Francis Town Council member Lee Snelgrove. Councilman Snelgrove jumped at the opportunity and made it easy for us to decide on Francis Town Park for this years tree planting project." The Kamas Valley Lions Club will contribute $1,500 cash as well as volunteer labor provided by club members and “Friends of Lions”. The Lion's cash sponsorship is then matched by a $1,500 grant from TreeUtah.
Francis Town will be responsible for the costs of installing responsible irrigation for the new trees.
Last year’s tree project was at Oakley City Park, valued at approximately $8,000 and made possible by generous donations from Tree Utah, Kamas Valley Lions Club, Action Landscaping, AquaDocs, Kamas Valley Nursery, Ken’s Kash, and South Fork Hardware. This year’s effort is being coordinated by Francis resident and Eagle Scout candidate Eric Adair. Eric could still use a few more volunteers, so please feel free to come over and get dirty for a good cause. Lunch is being provided. Local rancher David Ure has volunteered to assist with mulch and topsoil. AquaDocs, a water quality Solutions Company located in Kamas, will provide special root watering system to enhance efficient irrigation.
Everyone is welcomed to participate in the planting and volunteers are still needed. It will begin around 9:30am at the Francis Town center, 2317 Springhollow Rd. Lunch will be supplied. Francis Councilmen Lee Snelgrove said. "I am thankful to TreeUtah and the Kamas Valley Lions Club for giving Francis Town this opportunity to plant trees in the park. By planting these trees it will greatly enhance the beauty of our park, and give some needed shade on parts of the park that really need it."
Great Job folks. What a great sense of community these guys have!
"Many Pitch in to Plant Trees in Francis"
From Jason Barto
Membership Chairperson
Kamas Valley Lions Club
Over 35 volunteers embraced a chilly Saturday morning to dig and plant 17 trees at Francis town center. Project leader Eagle Scout candidate Eric Adair's efforts at recruiting volunteers and securing donated materials allowed this to be the largest TreeUtah project in the state. According to Jeff Ward, President of TreeUtah, it was also the most smoothly run tree planting completed in the shortest period of time. More trees were planted in less time than any other planting due to the advanced preparations of Eric Adair and Francis Councilman Lee Snelgrove.
Kamas Valley Lions Club member Jason Barto said: "I like to look at it as the beginning of years of reward. I saw the smiles of satisfaction and achievement on all the people's faces who volunteered their time and who made this project possible. That feeling gets reignited every time someone visits the trees. The great thing about trees is that they keep on giving."
Jason continued: "With the problems challenging our country today, it is refreshing to see a group of hardworking youth. It gives one hope that the old fashion ethics of hard and honest work are being passed down to another generation."
Saturday's Tree Planting project was valued at over $9,000 and was completed with minimal impact to the taxpayers of Francis. That shows the power of cooperation and community service.
Thanks to TreeUtah for their invaluable contribution and guidance, Francis Councilman John Keyes for his time helping plant the trees, Councilman Lee Snelgrove for bringing this project to Francis and the countless hours and calls to coordinate the event, as well as all the family and friends who participated on Saturday. In addition, without the help of these valued businesses and contributors, this project would not have been possible: Leavitt Lumber for the shredded wood chips, Chris Ure for the organic topsoil, The Sprinkler Barn for irrigation system parts, The Home Depot for pvc pipe, AquaDocs for 10root watering systems, South Fork Hardware for the trencher rental, Mr. Tal Adair for tree transportation and irrigation parts, and Mrs. Rae Adair for the much needed breakfast, and Mrs. Jody Snelgrove for the great sloppy joe lunch.
Planning efforts are already underway for next year's tree planting project. Contact Lions Club member Jason Barto at 783-2937to recommend a tree planting site in your community.
