Oakley Diner Proposal SR32 & North Bench Rd

4/26/07 At last nights Planning Commission meeting in Oakley, Keith Walker introduced his Oakley Dinner Idea on his triangle property at SR32 and North Bench Road.
His Petition for a Zone Change from Residential to Commercial was denied by the Planning Commission but his idea of his Specialty Food Dinner in Oakley went over very well with close to 50 people attending the meeting. The Commission suggested he comes back requesting a Conditional Use Permit.

The 1939 Built Dinner is 16' x 60'. It sits approximately 46 customers with 20 stools and 26 booth seats. It will undergo a complete restoration following the manufactures blueprints. It is presently in Middletown, Rhode Island.

Even thought this hearing was about the Zone Change, many people expressed their feelings on the idea of the Oakley Dinner. As the gateway from the North many thought this would be an awesome attraction, but more comments were heard that this should be an open space park with a possible statue. It was stated "Let the Folks in the Cemetery rest in peace". The Oakley Polar King showed how much traffic they receive and the though of is there going to be enough parking was brought up. Overwhelmingly we heard the idea of we love the dinner but this is the wrong place for it. Ideas of a land swap with the city were then brought up.

It is great to see the Oakley People involved in the Planning Process. We are happy to make this forum available and hope to see many comments here. CF

The Dinner idea is a winner!
If allowed, It will benefit the entire community through tax revenue, increased tourisum and another choice for dinning out.
I know this may not be popular with some, but I also believe the proposed location is perfect. The location gives the business exposure to SR32 without the traffic problems associated with parking right on SR32.
There was a lot of talk thursday about making the vacant lot some kind of City Park, but without a serious commitment from the City, I don't see this happening. The lot has been an eye sore for some time.
I believe this is an idea that deserves our support!

Thank you Clifford for providing this forum for discussion.

On June 10th,The American Diner Museum of Rhode Island selected Oakley City (among 3 other contending cities) to receive the vintage 1939 O'Mahoney diner which has spent most of its life in Middletown, Rhode Island. This will be one of the few authentic diners located west of the Mississippi. The 66,000 lb. 60' long diner is presently being prepared for the long transport across the country and should arrive in Oakley the early part of June. It will then undergo months of restoration before being placed on its permanent foundation which is still being decided by the city council members. Although a private enterprise funded by a group of Oakley residents, this unique roadside attraction promises to be a boon to Oakley and hopefully an anchor for the future downtown restoration plans. Keith Walker of Oakley is heading up the project and welcomes any volunteer efforts to expedite the diner's grand opening which is scheduled early summer 2008. Keith can be contacted keith@highdefinitions.com or (435) 783-5840

My husband and I will be traveling from North Carolina to Layton in a couple of weeks. Someone on TripAdvisor recommended The Road Island Diner while we are in Utah. It looks like the owner has done a wonderful job with the restoration and I look forward to enjoying a meal at The Road Island.
